Double Cross by James David Jordan

Thursday, December 03, 2009 Posted by The Knutson Klan

Over the holiday weekend, I read a fantastic new book, Double Cross, from author James David Jordan. Double Cross is the follow-up to Forsaken, and a must read for those who love crime novels. When I was sent the book to review, I was really excited because I knew that this type of novel is right up my alley. I'm a huge fan of authors like John Grisham, Dee Henderson, and my recent discovery, Kathy Herman. All these authors are known for their thrilling story lines, adrenaline filled action, and my obsession with finishing their books in a minimum number of sittings. I actually finished this book all in one sitting it was that good! Here's a bit about the book from the author:

Someone is after former Secret Service agent Taylor Pasbury. Again. The top assistant of prominent televangelist Simon Mason has turned up dead. All signs point to embezzlement and suicide, but something doesn’t add up. When Taylor investigates, shots begin to fly. As if dodging bullets isn’t tough enough, another surprise awaits Taylor, and it’s on her front doorstep. Her mother, who abandoned Taylor when she was a child, has reappeared. Soon Taylor, with her mother in tow, is careening down a twisting trail of danger and deceit, where nothing can be taken at face value. It’s a path that leads to troubling truths about her family’s past. A path that could lead to revelation and restoration. Or disaster. My promise to you, as always, is to write page-turning stories that will help you explore and grow in your faith. I hope you’ll join me for an exciting ride, with Taylor Pasbury and Double Cross!

Check out the book trailer too!

James David Jordan writes in a new and exciting way that is much like other authors I enjoy, but there was something also unique about his writing. Somehow, he managed to take an intense action packed crime mystery and inject a ton of humor in it. There were several parts that I read out loud to my husband as I was reading because they were so funny. The main character's mother, Hilary, is hilarious. She's a loopy woman, and while she does suffer from some mental issues, some of the things she says and does in this book are laugh-out-loud funny! On top of that, add the fact that her daughter, Taylor, is trying desperately to make a connection with a woman that she hasn't seen or heard from since she was nine. There is drama, action, adventure, mystery, humor and so much more. This story has it all, including the beginnings of a love story. Taylor is a fantastic main character, tough and vulnerable at the same time. My favorite part of the novel is when she rescues her mother from the bad guys Rambo style! I wanted to stand up and cheer!

One of the big things that I loved about this book is while it definitely has a spiritual foundation and not rated more than PG-13, there's still the action and suspense that you find in popular crime drama fiction. Double Cross would also be a perfect book for a new Christian as the main character, Taylor, is a new Christian herself and still struggling to understand what that means and learning how to make a fresh start in her lifestyle. She makes some mistakes but picks herself back up to try again. Between that and the struggle she experiences in working through her issues with her past and her mother, it was very easy to get emotionally connected with the characters in this story. There was some reference to events that took place in Forsaken, but nothing that makes it hard to follow without having read the first book. Double Cross can stand alone, but it did make me want to go back and read the first installment of Taylor Pasbury's story.

Double Cross retails for $14.99 but is you can find it at Amazon for only $10.19! This would be a great holiday gift for the book lover in your life.

This giveaway has ended. Congratulations to our winner: Maja!
